Rollinsville 4×4
It has started to get hot in Colorado. 90's is not uncommon in the afternoons. The best way to escape the heat is to head to the mountains. Most weekends I get away on the motorcycle but I thought it would be nice for Jess and I to do something together. Good thing she loves to take the truck out and do some 4x4 trails. One place I had scouted out was Rollins Pass. Being nice and close this seemed like the perfect destination for an afternoon trip. Just head west when you hit Rollinsville and follow the dirt road. You can drive up to the Moffat Tunnel and check it out. Then back track just a little bit and go up the Rollins Pass Road AKA Moffat Road.
We got up to just below tree line and the road was drifted out about 2.5 feet of snow. Up to that point I hadn't even put it into four wheel drive. I think we could have crossed the drift but I didn't want to risk it without a backup vehicle to pull us out if we got stuck. There were lots of ATVs messing around and it was not the peaceful setting we were looking for so we headed back down to the quiet 5 house town of Tolland.

In Tolland there you can take Mammoth Gulch Road southwest towards the town of Apex. A few miles up, the road forks and you can follow the sign to Apex or you can take the 4x4 trails. The 4x4 trail was pretty difficult and just at the limit of the stock Frontier (with trail tires) capability. We would have been a bit more comfortable with a few more inches of clearance. Fortunately, there was a couple of other mostly stock vehicles and the guys seemed to know the road over to Central City. So, we followed them most of the way. There are so many roads, trails, and offshoots that we would have been lost without following them. The trail was rough enough I probably would have turned around if they hadn't been heading where we wanted to go. I am really looking forward to going back and exploring some of the other trails when we have a second vehicle along.
