Riding in the Ozarks

The Ozarks have to be the best place in the world to drive or ride. Good roads, rolling hills, lots of turns and no traffic. It is hard to believe that it is so good. I used my GPS to track our route but unfortunatly I didn't realize that leaving it on all the way home made it fill the route memory and kick out the best rides. It is 850 miles and about 14 hours of riding from Longmont Colorado to Branson Missouri . It was really nice to ride with my parents who I met there. We headed south most days and got some of the best riding in down in Arkansas. Fantastic, Brilliant, Amazing roads. Here are the routes we explored mapped in google maps. I could stay there another week and find some more..... Also, check out the pictures from the trip here.

Scenic Highway 7 is probably the most famous road in Arkansas. It crosses the Buffalo River scenic waterway and takes you though the Boston Mountains. You can get a nice cruising speed going and most of the road is 50-60 mph. There is a section of 35mph turns to keep it interesting. 16 crosses 7 and allows for an interesting ride back to Harrison via Ben Hur, Snowball, and Dongola. You can't make that up.

Just south of Branson you can get on take a nice trip across Table Rock Lake. Eat lunch in a place called Blue Eye and then seek out the Pig Tail (Trail?)Route. I was told that the Pig Tail is the point when 16 and 23 run together. 21 is just south of Blue Eye so off we go and catch 16 towards 23. I think that the Pig Tail is a long circling 280* something turn with a big switchback. I choose to stay on 16 and loop back north. Just before we cross 74 we stopped at the Pig Tail gas station so I guess we were in the right area. The return trip is a nice cruise on 412 and then up 65 to complete the figure 8.

The last day trip in the Ozarks was a short ride. Starting in Kirbyville, where out family farm is, head out 76. 76 goes through Mark Twain National Forest. It is a nice ride and has a lot more farmland than Arkansas. It is about 50 miles to Ava on the other end. We stopped for ice cream and then doubled back. It would have been nice to make a loop and ride down to 5 and 95 but we had to be back on time for dinner with the rest of the family that evening.

Kirbyville to Ava is the only track I captured that didn't get kicked out.
